Twenty-Four

Harper

I was feeling pretty good. Things had definitely been tilted in my favor. Cypress and Harper sitting in a tree… I started to sing. I laughed aloud at my silliness. Kameron practically handed him to me. There would be no need to trick Cypress into choosing me now. Thank God. I wasn’t too thrilled about stretching my body all out of shape just yet. When Cypress went on tour, I was going to be right by his side and not with a big ass belly either. I knew I was going to have to stay on point. Women flocked to entertainers, and with Cypress being so good looking, they were going to be throwing themselves at him.

I wondered if I should use Harpress or Cyper. How cute both of them were. I’ll let Cypress choose. I giggled at my creativeness.

As I drove toward the exit from campus, I passed the law clinic. It caused me to think about my future mother-in-law, the only grandparent my child would get a chance to know. I had been slacking on her case. I guess I should at least visit with her to see if there was anything I could really do to get her released. The last thing that I wanted to do was have my child visiting Grandma in jail.

It was a short fifteen-minute drive down to Lew Sterret Justice Center from campus. I pulled into the parking lot and found a spot near the front. I grabbed my intern badge and headed toward the visitor’s entrance. I showed the jailer working the desk my credentials and asked if I could see my client. I didn’t think I could ever get tired of saying that. It made me sound so official. I gave Cynthia’s name, and he looked her up on his computer. He told me she already had a visitor.

“Who?” I questioned.

“Mingo Harris.”

I nodded my head. I remembered Cypress had mentioned his father’s name before. There weren’t a whole lot of people named Mingo. It was an easy name to remember. I knew I could pull rank as an attorney regardless if I was fully licensed or not.

“Do you want me to bump her visitor?” the jailor asked before I had a chance to make that request.

“Yes,” I told him. “I’ll let him know and send him out. Thanks,” I added and walked toward the visiting room before he had a chance to tell me that wasn’t proper procedure. I made sure I added an extra sway to my hips to keep him occupied while I cruised into the room. By the time I reached the door, I heard the familiar sound of the buzz, letting me know the door was temporarily unlocked, and I could walk through.

Once I walked into the room, I spotted Cynthia and Mingo sitting away from everyone else. They were almost secluded and seemed to be in deep conversation. So much so, neither looked up when I entered the room. I slowly walked over, nearly hugging the wall.
